You use natural skincare designed for your skin type. You purchase skin treatments specifically for your skin issues. You clean your phone daily, swap out your pillowcase regularly, and avoid foods that trigger breakouts and reactions.

So, why do you still have pimples, irritation, or redness?

One of the Most Overlooked Causes of Acne and Skin Problems

Nope, it’s not your night cream or exfoliation mask. Take a look in your beauty kit.

Those makeup brushes, facial roller, and foundation sponge can help you create the look you want, but they are also skin disruptions waiting to happen.

Take a makeup brush, for instance. The makeup, face oils, and dust that collect on bristles are a breeding ground for bacteria and one of the biggest causes of acne. And once hair follicles become clogged with bacteria, it can lead to acne, rashes, and irritation.

Even worse, a study published in the Journal of Microbiology stated that “superbugs” E.coli and Staphylococci were found in 9 of the 10 beauty products studied, with beauty sponges topping the list. These types of bacteria can cause even more serious health issues, like skin infections and blood poisoning

When and How to Clean Makeup Brushes and Beauty Tools

One of the Main Causes of Acne and Other Skin Issues Is Probably in Your Beauty Kit and how to properly clean your beauty tools

No need to pitch your beloved beauty tools. Proper cleaning and replacement techniques will make these beautifiers your skin’s best friend. Here’s how!

Sponges:

Blending sponges, which are often used damp, are bacteria magnets. You may have read that one sponge can last up to three months or more. But we recommend washing regularly and replacing them monthly to be on the safe side.

Makeup brushes:

Strive to wash brushes weekly to keep them as free from skin irritating bacteria as possible. Here’s how to easily clean makeup brushes. Use a mild soap (your facial cleanser works well) and allow to air dry completely. Don’t forget to wash your eye makeup brushes too.

Facial rollers and gua sha tools:

These types of beauty tools are super easy to clean. Use a mild soap and water to thoroughly cleanse them weekly and wipe with a tissue after each use to remove oils and product.

Battery-operated tools:

Facial massagers, like My Skin Buddy, can be wiped off with a tissue after each use. Using rubbing alcohol and a cotton pad, clean the area used on skin weekly.
